North Valley Chorale to Mark the Season with Song
For Immediate Release 2/24/2018
The North Valley Chamber Chorale presents its spring concert, “Love and Peace in Time of War,” on Sunday March 18th at 2:00 PM in Bidwell Presbyterian Church, 208 W 1st St, Chico. The chorus, under the direction of Dr. David Scholz, will perform music by Josef Haydn and Claudio Monteverdi. Vocal soloists and an orchestra including members of the North State Symphony will accompany the chorale.
The featured work on the concert is Haydn’s Missa in tempora belli “Mass in Time of War,” composed in 1796. Soloists Dara Scholz, Daun Weiss, Timothy Westerhaus, and Ryan Downey join the chorale in this beautiful setting of the Catholic Mass. As Haydn wrote the piece, his native Austria was threatened by the French army of Napoleon, and hopes for peace can be heard throughout the music.
An even older composer, Claudio Monteverdi, composed the other two works on the NVCC program almost four hundred years ago in Italy. They include Lamento della ninfa “Lament of the Nymph” and Beatus Vir, a setting of Psalm 112 from the Bible. Rachel Gallagher and David Scholz will add their voices to the other soloists for this delightful psalm setting.
NVCC Music Director Scholz finds the music appropriate and powerful for modern ears despite its age. “The music ranges from the tragedy of betrayal and lost love to the joyous praise of god and a plea for peace in troubled times. It is timeless and beautiful music and still speaks to us in the present day.”
Tickets for the concert are available at Zucchini and Vine, 204 Main St, from Chorale members, and at the door.
